Between Us

My MA final major project, which based upon my personal story - a conversation between my father and I five years ago. He wanted to know the reason why his daughter had always dressed like a boy, and I wanted to tell him the truth that I am a transgender as well. However, in the end, we all chose to escape again under the pressure of the deeply rooted Chinese tradition. In the film, except for the traditional lantern and the abstract pressure part is red, the rest is black and white. This kind of tradition makes every Chinese feel warm and reassured, but it also represents a bloody desperation for the Chinese transgender groups. The film takes Chinese New Year’s Eve as the time background, which is the most representative of Chinese traditional festivals. The main idea of the film is to pass to spectator a kind of struggle and sorrow in which the father and the child are closely combined by tradition and love each other, but at the same time they are unable to get close because of the traditional pressure.
